Experience First
In this Activity we're talking about the costs for different movie rental and streaming services. You could start the lesson by having students talk about which service is their favorite and why. You'll also want to make sure that students understand how the different services work. For example, with Netflix you can watch unlimited movies but pay a monthly fee. Students should work through the whole first page in their groups. As you walk around and check in with groups, you'll want to ask them about their work and make sure they have all of the necessary parts for a correct solution. If a group doesn't use context in their interpretations, ask them what x = 0 means in this case. Use your guiding questions to help them notice what they're missing. Guiding Questions:
Formalize Later
We added interpretations for slope and the y-intercept in the margin. We like to use a template for these to help our ELL students, but it is up to you to decide. What's important is that students understand that the slope is the change in y for each additional x and that the "y"-intercept is the "y"-value when "x" is 0. Make sure to point out that context is a must! We introduce here the notation of "delta y" and "delta x". We will use this notation in the coming lessons so make sure you explain it here.
